Since 2005 Tuborg Green has been an organizer of the bright and unique musical festival Tuborg Greenfest. Tuborg Greenfest can boast such headliners as Metallica and Jamiroquai. This year the headliners (one’s heart melts with joy pronouncing these names) are Fatboy Slim, Groove Armada and Leeroy Thornhill from Prodigy!
FatBoy Slim (UK)
FatBoy Slim, the master of fu-fighting of music, original name Quentin ‘Norman’ Cook (Norman Cook), was born in Bromley, England, in 13th July, 1963, but grew up and inspired in Redhill (England). FatBoy Slim started DJing when he moved to Brighton to attend college. FatBoy Slim’s first band was the Housemartins, where he played bass, invited by his old school mate Paul Heaton. He turned into one of the top DJs and remixers, working with such a stars like U2, Madonna, Cornershop, Wildchild, Beastie Boys, Fluke… even he remixed Queens “we will rock you”.
In 1998 he released one of the greatest albums of all time “You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby” (this name comes from a Virginia’s Slims cigarette slogan). This was the #1 album at the dance stage for 1998 with such absolutely smashing hits like “The Rockafeller Skank”, “Right Here, Right Now”, “Praise You”… At this time he reached more and more audience absolutely domination of the charts and the dance floors.
On the New Years Eve of 2005, Fatboy Slim performed live in front of a tremendous crowd on Bondi Beach in Australia. During this all night set, Fatboy Slim reverted back to his original style of music production and DJ-ing with an emphasis on Dance music. He received an award for Best Dance Act 1999 from the Brits and four MTV Video Award nominations for his video ‘Praise You’.
Groove Armada (UK)
In 1997 Groove Armada's first single 'At The River' was released on Tummy Touch Records. Originally a limited 7" release of 500 copies, the funky fireside dub of "At The River" caused mass hysteria amongst the nation's hacks "Spotters are swapping their grandmothers for copies of it", said Kevin Braddock at the NME. The same year Tummy Touch released Groove Armada's debut album. Combining jazz and funk influences with house rhythms and technology, 'Northern Star's' wide range of references and eclectic feel led to praise from publications as diverse as Mixmag, Jockey Slut, Select, Echoes and Touch, and led to the coining of the phrase "Nu-Med" or "Nu-Balearic" to describe their sound.
4th November 2002 saw the release of the boys 4th studio album, 'LoveBox' - named after the famous club night which they successfully ran / DJ'd at Rouge in London. The album was met with both commercial and critical success alike. The singles 'Easy' and the ballsy 'Purple Haze' were Top 20 hits and the album went on to sell in excess of 100,000 copies in the UK. Naturally a sold out UK tour followed including 2 nights at Brixton Academy and 'LoveBox on a Summers Day' - Groove Armada took over Clapham Common on the bank holiday weekend and hosted the dance event of the Summer.
Leeroy Thornhill (UK)
Prodigy dancer Leeroy Thornhill had enough of staying in the background, and being prominent only on stage, so he started to work on his own and record some solo material. Later he also decided to leave the Prodigy. His first solo project was originally called "The Longman" (referring to his height of about 2 meters). He released his first solo record back in 1996, 'The Longman EP'. The single contained the following tracks: Dreamers, The Suspect, The Smoker, Rock It. He also provided a track for Kris Needs' 'Needs Must' compilation and laid down a remix for fellow Essex ravers Shades of Rhythm.
In 1999, Leeroy changed his nickname to Flightcrank, and started to release records under that nick. First, he made a remix of Dr. Dooom's (aka Kool Keith) rap track ‘Leave Me Alone’ and then several other remixes for Psycho Base, Runaways and David Gray. He has signed a deal with Copasetic Records and in 2000, he released his second solo EP titled “Flightcrank” EP. It contained 3 original songs (Twisted , Drifter and Masterplan) and a remix by Lee Scratch Perry. In 2001 he released his first solo album called “Beyond All Reasonable Doubt”.
The album encompasses everything from breakbeat to lo-fi. As well as Perry, it includes a collaboration with fellow dubster the Mad Professor and Finley Quaye. It spawned the single 'Amazing', which has been remixed by Cameron McVey who is known for his work with Massive Attack, All Saints and Neneh Cherry. It is on this laid back groove that you can hear Leeroy's mellow vocals for the first time.
