Haven't read the articles yet, but the broad answer to your question is:
"yes" However, Western and Southern Europe, in particular, will not be so liberal in a few decades. |

Talk the talk or walk the walk?
I think the question is "Do Europeans just talk the talk or do they walk the walk?"
European governments have been complaining and maybe rightfully so that the US should close Gitmo, and release the detainees. However, when the question then comes; "Well, will you take them?" The answer is;" Of course not, they are much too dangerous, and besides it is an American problem not ours." If we huddle down, and don't do anything then maybe the terrorists will just blow up a few of our train stations, and not destroy our buildings or kill too many of our people. To quote one of my favorite movies; "Well, you are either part of the solution, part of the problem, or just part of the scenery." Europeans, which is it? |

Isn't it funny how all those who said that Guantanamo was a disgrace are with hands in pockets whistling!

Have to completely agree with you on that!! The "ideal" of closing Gitmo is far from reality.

Why should Gitmo be closed anyway? As far as I'm concerned anybody held there, or most of them anyway, are dangerous terrorists or terrorist wannabes. I mean, how many people go for a "walking holiday" in Afghanistan anyway?
I am actually quite disgusted by the British Government which took back a number of Brit citizens held there and then let them loose. I am even more disgusted by the same government which also took back a number of British RESIDENTS (citizens of other countries) held there and let tehm loose. As far as I'm concerned the best thing that should have happened in Gitmo would have been to gas the inmates with Zyklon B. |

And when they do finally offer asylum to some Taliban fighters (Hello? Anybody needs a reminder what the Taliban is and what they did/do?!), and some buses and cafes do finally explode tearing some children's heads off their bodies, guess who those very same people are going to blame? Why, the government of course, for not doing enough to ensure security.
It's almost too stupid to believe...

I am quite certain that Europe IS too liberal for it's own good.
Look at my signature. It takes a certain amount of "rough men," and this means both men who are rough in thought and attitude and unafraid to take a hard look at the issues, and men who are rough in action who are not afraid to step up to the plate and "do" something in a confrontational way, to keep a village, a town, a country or a civilization safe from the natural corruption into pussydom of the people and the subsequent oppression from totalitarianism or Talibanism of some type that always follows. Europe is falling into this trap. I have been, on this forum, categorized as a knuckledragging neocon neanderthal. Yes, partly true! But knuckledragging neocon neanderthals is what it will take to save Europe. It's like in those old western movies that today's Liberals so much despise. The townspeople need a sheriff to protect them from the baddies so they have to hire a someone with an aptitude for violence. The trouble is that after the new sheriff rids the town of baddies the town's people snub and turn against the sheriff too because, "he is also a man of violence". And so history repeats itself. The problem boils down to one thing: Both Europeans and Americans have lost their "absolutes," (though there is still some hope for America left.) And, people have forgotten how to tell right from wrong or simply no longer even believe that they exist, and therefore can not unanimously agree on issues. ......Which opens the door for those can agree, like The Taliban. And so the good little citizens will once more take it up the aasss! |

For those of you who ever read Steyn's "America Alone: The End of the World as We Know it" (Pipes' review: Europe is Finished, predicts Mark Steyn), I've always liked this satyrical amazon customer review on this book:
"Alone at last! Dear Suetonius: Wish you were here in Capri---weather is all balmy & sunny, beaches are fab, chicks look hot in their togas---what a great idea it was to summer here by the old Tiberian imperial palace! Even though my laurel wreath has gotten a little wilty (all the humidity), I still feel sorry for you, dealing with all the bugs & flies & wolves & Jove knows what else up there in Germania, dealing with all those dreadful barbarians. What's the point, really? Why don't we leave them alone? Rome doesn't have respect for anyone else's culture: it's just disgusting. And why do we still have Legions in the far provinces, anyway?----we've had 'em there for more than 200 years, and they're still getting killed, it's about time to bring you boys home! There's no excuse for keeping *anybody* on the Danube---probably just one of Praetor Bushius's & Chenius's plots to get cheap grain. Or as my Greek buddy Aegisthus said at a protest in Hippolita last week "Not in our Name, no Blood for Grain!" Let me tell you about a book I read last week, a real riot: "Rome Alone". The author, Marcus Steynus, is a real howler: he argues that the Barbarians, and their Wotan-worship, & their whacked-out birth rate, and their uncontrolled immigration, are undermining the Empire, and will ultimately be our undoing. The world, Steynus says, is about to get a lot hairier & scarier. Can you believe it? The Barbarians! The guys who paint themselves bright blue & smear their hair straight up with their own dung, & dance around wooden statues in the woods, & live in caves! Those guys are gonna bring down the Empire. Yeah, right: the only thing those Huns, Goths, Sarmatians & Vandals are gonna bring down is the IQ level of the provinces. Steynus makes two points about the "Barbarians" (how Romano-centric!) settling among us: 1) they're not forced to assimilate---they still abide by their own customs at the fringes of the Empire (& what's wrong with that, by Jove & Mithra?); & 2) they're out-breeding indigenous Roman citizens! Wooooo, scary! What are they gonna do, out-manual labor us to death? Besides, who wants to have kids these days---not a single one of my friends from Rome! Too many things to see, too many people to do, if you catch my drift. Anyway, aside from being horribly Germano-phobic, Steynus isn't even that accurate. Rome Alone? C'mon, even if there is a threat (which there isn't, because Wotan is the God of Peace, as everbody with a brain knows), Steynus doesn't realize there are other players out there---China & India. How can you even take his argument seriously when doesn't even talk about include China & India? Barbarians destroy Rome? I'm betting Nero has a higher chance of being dug up and invited back from a violin concert first. Steynus is a Big Silly, bottom line. I mean, come on---those stinky guys with the horns are gonna topple the Empire? I don't think so. Rome wasn't built in a day, and it's not gonna be destroyed in one, either. Happy Satyricon (or, if you're Steynus, "Wotan's Day", ha! ha!). Your Friend, FABIVS JSG " by Legio Mortis Assassin JSG "Black Ops Teep" |

Interestingly, there is a growing body of literature here in Russia that basically argues the same thing (with a Russian twist, obviously, which can be aptly described as "Russia Alone" ). This idea that Europe is about to bite the dust has become quite popular as of late. And if you've been to Paris recently, you might even agree with that assessment...

"People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf."
It's not only rough men ready to do violence: we are also protected by rough dogs ready to do violence. Both should know their place in society and be totally obedient to their masters - the dogs must not rule, and neither should the "rough men" because neither has the intellectual or moral capacity for understanding, or the political/diplomatic savvy to produce lasting solutions. In another thread you point out that the recent Israeli blitzkrieg against the Gaza ghetto failed in its objective of ending the Hamas missile attacks against Israel. Duhhhh.....there is no military solution to terrorism and never has been - it's only the "rough men" who are not "pussies" who tell us that there is. Regrettably, these shit-for-brains, diplomatic compromise=capitulation, my-gun-is-bigger-than-yours-and-so-is-my-cock, Miles Gloriosus wankers cannot recognise who their actual superiors are and only listen to their own kind. But please, DDT vermin exterminator who boasts of carrying a concealed weapon, that there may be a "pussy" sitting very close to you who, if he gets a glimpse of your weapon, is willing to rip your eyeballs out and leave you as a welfare "parasite" for the rest of your life, and an example to other dogs-of-war who think they call the shots.

I am sick and tired of this american garbage about "Liberals" and "Conservatives"... Don't you understand it serves the likes of people (Fox News) who want to see the United States and the world in an angry and divided frame of mind??? Bush is gone, that era is over, time to grow up and think like an adult. |
