Why do we need vitamins ???

Vitamins are substances that your body needs to grow and develop normally. There are 13 vitamins your body needs. They are vitamins A, C, D, E, K and the B vitamins (thiamine, riboflavin, niacin, pantothenic acid, biotin, vitamin B-6, vitamin B-12 and folate). You can usually get all your vitamins from the foods you eat. Your body can also make vitamins D and K. People who eat a vegetarian diet may need to take a vitamin B12 supplement.

Each vitamin has specific jobs. If you have low levels of certain vitamins, you may develop a deficiency disease. For example, if you don’t get enough vitamin D, you could develop rickets. Some vitamins may help prevent medical problems. Vitamin A prevents night blindness.

The best way to get enough vitamins is to eat a balanced diet with a variety of foods and also you can get vitamins as tablets through without prescriptions.

Interesting post, I think a lot solve these problems (especially in winter) ourselves....

Why?

Vitamins? Yes, why not! But it is chemistry and in case you can eat 3 oranges, 2 apples, 3 potato, 1 carrots and 2 tomato, 1 glass of milk per day, it will be enough and tasty.

tabs are pushed by the pharam congomerates

and yo udo not need them. the body does not store excessive vitamines but you ahve to give him every day the dose. and the 'multi vitamin' and whatever junk they praise to high heaven help only the wallets of the producers and share holders.
eat 3 or 4 good servings of fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, use salt that is iodised, a glass or two of milk, or other calcium 'bearing' food items, like one serving of 'sour' milk, might that be a NATURAL yogurt, kefir, kumis or the like. and you should do just fine.
eat dark whole wheat bread instead of the white bleached junk, less sugar, smokes (a killer of vitamins) and alkohol. and you will live happily ever after.
eat fresh russian 'pickled cabbage' it has more vitamin C than oranges or bell peppers, incredible, isn't it.
i have never touched in my life a singel vitamin tablet, but my refridgerator has always fruits and vegetables in it.

Agree perfectly, but there can be some case when you need substitude normal food with Vitamins:

one of the example is a diet, when there is a need to "maintan the health" without food.

But that is more an exception, agree!

P.S. I can gain weight even being just on apple diet for a week.

No alcohol?

Benedikt,
how come no alcohol?

I try to have a glass of wine for my dinners during the week. Do you mean this is not good for my health?!

They say it is good to have at best a few glasses of red wine every day. Even good doctors claim that some alchohol taken as a night cap is good for you. Many doctors take a few tots of Whiskey or Brandy before going to bed. This might also apply to brand named vodka. But be carefull ensure it is a good brand and can be trusted.

To summarise, I believe taking alchahol is good for you, providing that you don't over indulge. In fact when you think about it, in general too much of a good thing is not good for you. A very true saying expression.

In regards to vitamins. I shall tell you a story I was told by my teacher at school. That the Brits conuered a third of the world, the British Empire, on eating limes.British sailing ships travelled thoughout the world, but this agonising problem of their crew having a very nasty disease called Scurvy. In other words they were under nourished. They had no fresh vegatables or fruit. And more so the needed a citric fruit for vitamin C. Somebody by accident claimed they needed limes (green lemons) When the crew reluctantly took their quota of lime per day, instead of Rum! LOL! they discovered that none of their crew were no longer sick of Scurvy.

And that is why from this day, an Englishman is called a Limey.

Vitamins are an integral component of a balanced diet. They must be consumed directly in the form of food or through supplements as tonic or pills. If you have proper ingestion of vitamins, or, in other words, you take a complete diet, you will never feel the need to visit a doctor

I always take vitamins 1 month on 1 month off, its necessary.

I always take vitamins 1 month on 1 month off, its necessary. because our food and fruits don't contain vitamins enough in present days.
second reason- the cold climate and the big city pollution. keep your active immunity!
third reason -is sport, if you go to gym 2-3 times a week or you have another any sport activities

I tried to take a women's multivitamin every day since I don't eat vegetables and my main diet is junk food and soda. I'm also lactose intolerant so I don't get calcium from milk or dairy foods. But I just couldn't do the vitamins every freaking day. It was so aggravating to remember to take that huge horse pill twice every day I just threw the bottle away. There's just too many vitamins out there that they recommend I take, I gave up on it.

But I probably would eat those yummy fruit-flavored children's vitamins if they do anything special for me. Anyone know if children's vitamins have any benefits for adults? lol

I always prefer some good vegetables and consume lots of water. It's really helpful in keeping our body fit. I think even vitamins are an important part to a healthy lifestyle.

I take vitamin supplements because I have a food allergy. The hard part...absorbing the vitamins. If you take them but yr body is not absorbing them, there is no benefit.
