Opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi. 170 min (with one intermission). Libretto: Arrigo Boito. Music Director and Conductor: Felix Korobov. Stage Director: Andrei Konchalovsky. Sung in Italian. Based on William Shakespeare’s play "Othello," the opera was Verdi’s next-to-last and brought the composer to the peak of his dramatic power. Shakespeare’s strong characters, as well as the mixing of comic and dramatic situations, translate very well to the operatic stage. Andrei Konchalovsky, who has experience in staging performances at the world’s major opera houses, promises a great-scale stage production. Moreover, the opera’s set designer, Matt Dili from Britain, has worked not only at drama and opera theaters, but was also engages in the opening and closing ceremonies of the London Olympics. The role of the stage director in the opera genre requires humility,” – Andrei Konchalovsky said. “My task is, first of all, not to deprive the listener of the music that this art exists for, especially when you stage an opera by a genius composer. The difficulty is that the visuals in the opera don’t have to correspond to the way Giuseppe Verdi once saw them. A certain shock is possible here, but only of a kind that wouldn’t destroy the great composer’ musical interpretation of the great dramaturgy”, - the stage director explained.
