| Are there any houses/flats that one could *buy* in or near Moscow for the same as a house goes for in the U.S.? e.g. $200,000 or hopefully less? I have seen outrageous rents of $8-10,000 or even more a MONTH and do not understand how people making $300 or even $500 a month can afford this. Bottom line: is it possible to sell my house in the U.S. (Boston, two-bedroom), pay moving expenses to Moscow or nearby and buy a house there anywhere? Buy an apartment? Thank you very much?

Dear Dimitra,
Prices of apartments located away from central Moscow vary from $2,500 up to $5,000 per square metre. This variance depends on many factors such as the quality of the building in which the apartment is located, the level of renovation of the apartment, the quality of the entrance and other communal areas and so on. Prices of houses located outside Moscow also vary tremendously depending on the distance from the city, the size of the property, the type of a settlement the property is located in, etc.
The monthly rents you quote are accurate but it has to be realised that although the average income of a Russian in Moscow is around $400 per month, it would only be very wealthy Russians or expatriates that could afford to buy or rent the more expensive properties.
This would mean that one could realistically expect to buy a 1-2 room apartment on the outskirts of Moscow for around $200,000 or a house located approximately 5-15 km away from Moscow of around 50-70 square
metres in size.
We would, however, recommend that you purchase an apartment in Moscow rather than an out-of-town house since it is much easier to live in-town rather than outside of Moscow. Living in-town is much more convenient from the points of view of both location, transport/travel and security, especially for an expatriate with little or no knowledge of Russian.
