Question:
I've found that if I get a Russian driver's license it is only valid for the length of my visa. How much will does a license cost? Do I have to get a new one with each new visa? Or can it be simply prolonged? What are the costs associated with extending the license?
Dak
Answer:
Dear Dak,
Here is some information from www.gai.ru.(that web-site also has English version, just click on ENG in top right corner.

"Foreigners, who comes to the Russian Federation for the term of less than six months, can use their national driving license with the translation into Russian, attested notarially. The given translation can be issued at the Leningrad prospectus, 7. If the visit is planned for the term of more than six months, it will be necessary for a foreigner to obtain a driving license of the Russian standard. The certification occurs under obligatory presence of the following documents:
-national permanent passport and Russian visa, registered in UVIR;
-medical certificate about the state of health;
-national driving license and its notarized exemplification in Russian.

In case the national driving license is valid, then it is necessary and enough to pass the theoretical examination. And in case the national driving license is expired, it is also required to pass the practical examination. If a foreigner passes all tests, he obtains driving license of the Russian standard". Good luck!
